I've had two small .44 Specials and they had plenty of thump. Good urban round but I think the Magnum is, as you say, a better Big Woods round. Then, ya start thinking, well, if I'm carrying open, I can probably justify a 4" barrel, and pretty soon the whole plan kind of plummets out of control, and the impressive pocket rocket idea is gone...or maybe it's just me?
I still have an N-frame .44 Special, great shooter, but it's a big gun compared to these Horton Specials. I think if I did opt for one of the N-frame snubs I'd forgo looks and tradition and put some Pachmayrs on it.... |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I saw one of those Lew Horton revolvers here at a gun shop and it was even more impressive "in person". If I could have come up with a single use for it I would have bought it - although now I can't remember how much the shop wanted for it. It was gone the next day so it didn't matter what I might have decided... I like the .44 Special caliber and have found it accurate and much easier to shoot than the .44 magnum (much like the difference between the .38 Special and .357 Magnum) but here in Montana it would be easier for me to justify a .44 Magnum (for carry in the woods). |
