Like I mentioned to Stu, I try one round of a new load in a known rifle at 100 yards in the hope that I can save some time and ammo. If it doesn't hit the paper I move to 25 yards and try again. If I find the new load is not consistent enough for me to walk the rounds to the center of the target at 25 yards, if it wanders all over instead, I just scrap the load. If I can adjust the scope to walk the holes to the center of the target at 25 yards that should put me in or very close to the black at 100 yards. I move the target to 100 yards and adjust the scope to walk the holes to the center of the target - if they spray all over at 100 yards and won't walk to the center of the target I scrap the load. If I can walk it to the center of the target, then I'll shoot the load for groups.
I use those white paper targets with the red/orange diamonds on them and they are also gridded in one-inch squares. When I say "walk" the holes I mean I figure how many inches vertically and horizontally I need to move the second hole to the center and adjust the scope accordingly; I usually get the second shot very close to the center. If I know I blew the shot and caused a miss, then I'll try a third and maybe even a fourth round but if I feel the bullets are just wandering and I can't reach the center because the load isn't consistent I just pack up, go home, pull the bullets and try again. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: if your rifle is spraying the target it's kind of hard to move the sights. which way do you go? |
