One great thing about this forum is that everyone is welcome and encouraged to express their personal opinions without worrying about being flamed, etc. To that end I really appreciate you posting, Bob, especially as you yourself have said you're not one for long responses.
I still disagree with you and Allan as I think you are both being short-sighted. (No pun intended. ) I understand that hitting your target is the primary purpose of a firearm. I accept that and, with the majority of my firearms that would be my goal as well. But the ability to create ammunition that, when mated with a particular firearm, will shoot small groups, is a worthy goal in and of itself, and I don't think we should throw that baby out with the bathwater. That's all I'm saying. I'm certainly not alone. Benchrest competition, which is only about group size, is a very popular shooting sport. Some of the most popular cartridges were created just for the benchrest sport, their goal: accuracy. Some of the more famous cartridges among riflemen became well known thru benchrest: .222 Remington, 6x47, 22PPC and the 6mmPPC--which some consider the most accurate cartridge ever. To say that only hitting an aiming point is worthy of praise ignores reality. It is an aiming point, not necessarily a bullseye. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Mark, Allan and All Mark, I understand there is a lot of kidding going on in this thread, but there is also a lot of serious comments. I can understand some of the reasoning behind the small groups that miss the point of aim. However my experience with guns has been hunting and the sighting in your weapon. After joining the Air Force, all my qualifying with the M1 Carbine depended on good high point count on the target and not a good close group over on the four ring. For about a year I shot on a small bore rifle team while stationed at Ft Mead, Md and again that 10 ring was about all that really counted and not the small group over to the side. For these reasons, the target below from Harvey Wilson is an example of what I believe makes up a target worthy of posting. Targets posted by Jerry is another example of great targets worthy of posting. YMMV Allan, I continue to agree with all your comments. I just wish I could express feelings and thoughts as well as you do. |
