When I first moved back to this area, I made friends with another inactive Marine who just happened to own a gun store, had a Manufacturer license, and owned 100+ acres of a tick farm about 3 hours from here. He was active in making select fire weapons (Post-86 samples) for some Class 3 Dealers, so I got to "help" him test fire many of those up on his property that was truly isolated from the world. Ammunition was plentiful and relatively inexpensive then, so the only investment I had to make was in the ammunition as he provided the weapons. I had the opportunity to fire a lot of different weapons, and it was truly fun. These days, that would be impossible for me, as he sold his store and his property, so all I can do now is vicariously enjoy others' experiences with select fire weapons. But it was fun while it lasted. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I can relate. I love spending an afternoon shooting someone's ammunition, but I couldn't afford to feed a real machinegun, nor do I have a place to shoot one nearby. The closest place I'm aware of is the Knob Creek Range south of Louisville, KY, and that's a three hour drive. There could well be closer ranges, and no doubt land owners around would allow friends to shoot, but I don't know any large land owners. Without the means to provide case quantities of ammo, and without a nearby range, a machinegun is really a rich man's toy, something he brings out to show off to his pals, but rarely gets to shoot. I'm not really that inclined to just show off something I can't make go bang regularly. (Or bangbangbangbang.) It's not worth the 10, 15, or 20k, even if I could pony up that sort of cash. And the only way to do it would be to have a liquidation sale of many firearms I enjoy and actually can shoot everyday if so inclined. |
