That was a great piece on the plane and the connection to Betty Grable. The "CAF" wasn't always the Commemorative Air Force, it started out as the Confederate Air Force when it was headquartered in McAllen, Texas. The name, of course, had to be changed to something more politically correct. We couldn't have some misguided soul making anybody uncomfortable by waving Confederate flags as the planes took off and landed! We all know how evil they are, history be damned...
I didn't take a ride in this one but I did go up in the one owned and operated by the Collings Foundation when it visited Austin, TX. I wanted the chance to see what my B-17 pilot dad felt when he went up in them. It was smaller, louder, and vibrated more than I expected but a thrill of a ride none the less. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: And who could forget that song or singer? Your note made me dig a bit deeper for the Betty Grable connection. This is what I found. Apparently, both the name and the Betty Grable connection date back only to 1978 or later. Still, it's a great tribute to the 1940s - plane, name, pin-up art and all. Stu |
