It was Castrol 30W, made from the Castor bean. Available from the local motorcycle shop. Dunno if it was a Harley shop that I got my lifetime supply (1 quart can) Surely, a Triumph shop would have it. HGW |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Very interesting. Do you happen to know what that oil is made with? That's not terribly viscous, is it?  Well, in those days, all those companies were playing with stainless steel as a relatively new toy. Probably Smith & Wesson and AMT were among the leaders working with it, and frankly, AMT jumped in head first because they only made stainless steel pistols. S&W had the advantage of building their guns with carbon steel first, then once the design was (reasonably) perfected, they could offer it in stainless. And without looking at a timeline, I don't think S&W offered stainless autos as early as AMT. But I also don't know whether S&W had already decided on using dissimilar stainless steels by the time they did offer stainless pistols.*
*For lurkers: obviously S&W had offered stainless revolvers long before anyone with the Model 60, but as revolvers are not subject to frame-slide galling, that experience was not exactly relevant to this issue. |
