I was always taught to squeeze rather than pull, I was told I shouldn't know when the gun was going to fire, if I did then it meant I was pulling the trigger.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: You guys are getting into a semantic fairyland where no such connotations exist!  Press is a totally legitimate term for applying pressure to the trigger - there is no directionality implied.  Pull works, too - the terms aren't mutually exclusive.
