I have no idea why that gun was chambered in .22 Short. However, it was the chambering that got my attention and thus got me to buy the gun. It was reliable in its own way. No felt recoil whatsoever.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Why 22 short and not long rifle? Just shooting shorts is only a step above blanks? Was it intended to be a "starters" pistol?
