That smooth action is a double-edged sword. Most people comment on the smoothness of the action, and it is undeniable, but the single locking lug, although at the front, kept the Krag from ever being chambered from a more powerful cartridge than the .30 U.S. Army, and forced the U.S. to adopt the M1903 Springfield, a Mauser-based design only nine short years after the issue of the first Krags in 1894.
Still, I want a Krag. I have a weakness for rimmed rifle cartridges. |
