The "Old Breed" usually refers to members of the 1st Marine Division, or at least it did when I was active. (The 1st Marine Division was also known as "Blue Diamond".) Your Grandson is in the 6th Marines, which is part of the 2nd Marine Division, which has other nicknames (i.e. Silent Second).
I don't think it matters which era of Marines you compare, they are always similar in physical conditioning, marksmanship and mind set. That's something that has continued down through the years. As for mess halls, I have no idea which era is/was better. I did my winter training at what was then called Pickle Meadows in the Cali Sierras. I'd be interested in hearing your grandson's experiences. Harvey |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: As I posted before my grandson is a Corporal, Fox, 2/6. From what I have seen of my grandson and some of his friends he has brought home with him a few times I think the "New Breed" are just as hard core as the "Old Breed" and possibly in better overall better physical shape. No "junk" food in the mess hall that's for sure. Did I tell you what they had to do in California last February when they were in the high Sierra for winter training? |
