Yeah load selection is important. I focus more on shot placement and shooting the threat to the ground. It doesn’t matter how good your hollow point is if you don’t hit something vital. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I would carry the 9mm too, and have. My only requirement is actual load choice. People outside this forum, and I talk to so many of them, have taken the idiotic "all service calibers are the same" mantra and run with it, too ignorant to understand that load choice is critical no matter what cartridge you carry. There are horrible loads in every caliber and some very good loads in most service calibers. But most people, and by that I mean I believe it to be a majority of people, do not do due diligence when choosing the actual ammunition they carry, and are only alive because the odds of being involved in a life or death gunfight are extremely low. And it isn't even that most loads, most JHP loads, are a poor choice. It's that loads must be paired with barrel lengths, and most people won't bother to test, or at least research tests, before choosing their self-defense load. there is an old saying to carry what the local cops carry, and this is likely to be a good part of your defense in court if you ever find yourself accused of a wrongful shooting, but in fact careful ammunition choice is far from universal even among police departments. The ammunition makers know this and so they market self-defense and law enforcement ammo knowing that they will sell ammo based on the name, appearance, price, and little more. |
