Section 10: Defense Weapons/Ammo Subject: Lawman's .45 Msg# 1063608

I've heard that many times. I do like the .45 caliber and still carry it. I don't believe caliber is everything, but as well-known trainer of police and armed citizens Massad Ayoob has said, nothing is everything, but everything is something.
To me, those who say there is no difference in service cartridges these days are wrong. They would be more correct to say that the gap in the differences between cartridges has closed considerably as ammunition technology has improved so much. The best JHPs from 9mm to .45ACP are very close. Some 9mms beat some .45s, and vice versa. Within the mix are other good service cartridges: .38 Super, .40S&W, .357 Magnum, and others. Each brings something to the table others may not. But each may lack something others may not. Every cartridge has its own recipe for success. At the end of the day stopping the bad guys comes down to bullet penetration and bullet expansion, and caliber--.35, .45, or .46!--does in fact matter. It's not everything, but it sure as heck is something. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I remember years ago when a Texas Ranger was asked why he carried a 45 he responded "because they don't make a 46"!
