You are indeed correct, Frank. U.S. Krags were in fact all .30-40s, as I'm sure you surmised. Back in the 1890s the U.S. military liked the Krag rifle design, but was not fond of the mid-bore 6.5x55 cartridge--in fact they saw it as a small bore in those days. The U.S. Navy did experiment with the Winchester Lee Navy in 6mm, but only the Navy issued that rifle, the Army never did, and it wasn't until modern times that the Army adopted a small bore rifle (5.56mm). | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Hi Stu, Back in the early 50's we use to rent Krag rifles for deer hunting in California. We had both 30/40 Krags and 6.5x55 Krags. The 6.5x55 were Norwegian Krags. I don't think there were any 6.5x55 US Krags. Speaking from memory and not sure this is correct. Frank |
