For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: You are indeed correct, Frank. U.S. Krags were in fact all .30-40s, as I'm sure you surmised. Back in the 1890s the U.S. military liked the Krag rifle design, but was not fond of the mid-bore 6.5x55 cartridge--in fact they saw it as a small bore in those days. The U.S. Navy did experiment with the Winchester Lee Navy in 6mm, but only the Navy issued that rifle, the Army never did, and it wasn't until modern times that the Army adopted a small bore rifle (5.56mm). |
