There is an entire revamping of the Marine Corps in process, with lots of unhappiness from many USMC veterans. In effect, USMC is returning to its Amphibious Expeditionary roots, and getting away from its "Land Army" tasks that have been in place since the end of WW II. They have eliminated heavy armor (tanks) units as well as heavy artillery units.There is a very long report called CMC38 Force Design 2030 Report that describes the changes to take place over this decade. The current USMC Commandant has been the driving force behind the concept.
As for snipers, they haven't eliminated them completely, they have just reassigned them from the original Scout Sniper Platoon designation, and placed them elsewhere. The Scout portion continues in that specialty (reconnaissance), but drops the Sniper portion. In the line outfits (infantry), they will continue having Designated Marksmen. My personal opinion is neutral on the reorg of USMC. On one side, I have always been negative on the Land Army concept, and positive on the Amphibious Expeditionary concept. But in light of what is happening in Ukraine, and potentially in Taiwan, I think stripping USMC of its heavy weapons may be a bit shortsighted at present. Of course the reorg planning started before we even pulled out of Afghanistan, when the combat scenarios were seen differently by the US military planners. Time will tell if USMC "jumped the gun". For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: The Marines just announced they are doing away with the Sniper platoons and shutting down the Scout Sniper school! Since forever the enemy knew if there were Marine sniper teams on the battlefield their lives were in imamate danger! Even a mile away they weren't safe and, they knew it so why, in God's name, are the Marines doing away with the teams? FYI, my grandson was his platoon's "long gun", using a semi auto M-14 with a scope that cost more than my car he could and would make you dead out to 1,000 yards and beyond!
