You're right about magazines. This is especially true with 1911s chambered for other than .45ACP. With the 9mm and .40S&W it is easy to find that even the issue magazines don't work well. I had to play around with a few different mag brands before I got my 1911 .40 to run reliably. With my nines I was lucky to find some special mags early on that solved possible problems. Short rounds in long magazines are simply a problem waiting to happen.
You are also right about quality of foreign brands. I've never owned a Turkish 1911 but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. I field stripped one at Eric's store a few years ago and was impressed with the manufacturing I could see. I also have several Phillipine-made 1911s and they have been excellent. And of course some of my Springfields, and yours, were made in Brazil, and are very high quality. I guess all Springfield 1911s are now made in the US. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Now that CNC machines are industry standard, I don’t think brand means as much as it used to. Even the Turks seem to be turning out some good products. Girsan and Tisas are very popular. They are not Wilson but you are not paying Wilson prices. I see this with AR’s. People that don’t have a wide range of experience will tout their pet brand as being the best. But the truth is most brands are good quality and most any rifle will serve the average shooter if it has the features they want/need. When it comes to reliability in 1911's, I see magazines as the biggest issue. Yes, some mags are better than others but you have to get the mags that work in your gun. |
