I recall the range officers, who were on the range all day, sticking empty pistol casings (.38?) into their ears as protection. I don't know if those were authorized or just acts of faith but I do know they had to be worthless, maybe even counter-productive!
Incidentally, you will tell us what a "bear walk" in the woods is, won't you. Does it involve toilet paper? Stu |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Yeah, we fired our M1s without any hearing protection (as well as pistols). Probably the worst headache I've ever had was during what we called "mad minute". That was when our entire rifle company would sit on a hillside and fire all of our weapons, using tracers at night, into a gully for a full minute. That was with M1s and BARs. This was post-Korean War, and it was to demonstrate firepower that had been used on some of the hill fighting in Korea. (Yep, the Marines were training to fight the last war, even with practicing "bear walks" in the hills at night. ![]() Harvey |
