Thanks to Harvey's recollection I think I now remember that part of the movie sequence in the museum theater showed how they moved the U-boat across Lake Shore Drive to get it to the museum. The Museum of Science and Industry was just south of the main downtown area ("the loop") and just across Lake Shore Drive from Lake Michigan.
Chicago was a pretty cool town as far as dirty, over-populated, crime-ridden big cities go... I can't imagine serving aboard a WWII sub... |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Maybe it was the Museum of Science and Industry. Last time I was there was probably 25-30 years ago. (ETA: thanks Harvey) Those tiny subs also had nearly 50 guys living aboard. Can you imagine? I have a photo in one of my books of a German sailor, pants down, squatting over the side rail of a U-boat taking his morning constitutional. The caption claimed it was often preferred when in warm, friendly waters, over the smelly, unpleasant, single head on a U-boat (at least the Mk.VII version). |
