I think "chipped beef" may be used in SOS served in 5 Star Restaurants, but the breakfast food of Super Marines uses this recipe:
Recipe for “Marine Breakfast” (Serves eight or two hungry Marines) Using a large skillet (12-14 inches), crumb1e and brown the ground beef with fat and salt. Remove the pan from the heat and let cool slightly. Mix in the flour until all of the meat is covered, using all of the flour. Replace the skillet on the heat and stir in the milk. Keep stirring until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens (boil a minimum of one minute). Serve over the toast. Salt and pepper to taste. Contrary to the misconception that "a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down", I think a tablespoon of fat does the job better. I have a friend who was a cook in the Marines. We have asked him many times to make SOS for us, and he always gives the same response -- "I only have recipes for 700 people!" Harvey |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Tried to explain at Christmas dinner (Prime Rib & Honey Ham) that SOS was NOT chipped dried beef (very expensive) but rather hamburger in a cream sauce.....best part was the 1/2 inch of yellow grease floating on top of the pot! Was your SOS any different? |
