No mystery, but I learned to love SOS in the Air Force, as they made it with sausage. When I was a kid growing it up my mom made it with what she called "chipped beef," but which was actually that very thin-sliced sandwich meat. She served it one toast instead of biscuits, as the original was served. I liked it fine, but the original as made by the military (and good breakfast restaurants, especially down south) was even better. I never ate in an Air Force chow hall that didn't serve "biscuits and gravy," aka SOS. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I ran into that corn bread and baked beans breakfast the first time when I was going through Basic Airman School at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida. Separately, I like both, but not together at 7 a.m. Of course that was in 1956, and I imagine meal things have changed for the better since then. But hopefully, the services are still serving SOS. Any of you other vets have some mystery or unusual food stories? Harvey |
