Maybe it was the Museum of Science and Industry. Last time I was there was probably 25-30 years ago. (ETA: thanks Harvey)
Those tiny subs also had nearly 50 guys living aboard. Can you imagine? I have a photo in one of my books of a German sailor, pants down, squatting over the side rail of a U-boat taking his morning constitutional. The caption claimed it was often preferred when in warm, friendly waters, over the smelly, unpleasant, single head on a U-boat (at least the Mk.VII version). |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I think it was the Museum of Science and Industry, but Field Museum sounds familiar and may have been another name for it. I remember there being a museum, a planetarium and an aquarium side by side on a spit of land sticking out into lake Michigan. I started first grade at the Eugene Field School in Rogers Park. He must have been a Chicago politician... I visited the aircraft carrier Lexington that is on display in Corpus Christi but I never made it to the battleship Texas while we lived there. I did stop and tour the battleship Alabama on a dive trip from Texas to Florida. Both the carrier and battleship were like small floating cities and while they were spartan they were no where near as cramped as the submarine. |
