We had the M16 (not A1 or A2) by the time I joined, but when I went to the DoJ/Bureau of Prisons Academy we used some pretty rattletrap M1 Carbines, as most of federal prisons still used them in those days. Penitentiaries like mine used M14s but we had to qualify with these M1 Carbines. The bores were't terrible, though you had to be on your game to keep them functioning during practice and qualification with them. It threw off many of those who were not gun people. The gun would stumble and they would stop and throw up their hand for a range officer. I'd just fix the problem and keep going. I shot expert with the M1 Carbine there. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Thanks, not sure when mine was made but condition is excellent so I'm guessing it didn't see a lot of use? The ones we used to qualify in USAF basic training were as close to a "smoothbore" as you could get. The range, if I remember correctly was 1,000 INCHES and shots were scattered far and wide. |
