Maybe my trouble was based on never buying soft lead bullets, but rather buying the hard lead bullets advertised to reduce leading. It seemed to me that even jacketed bullets finally built a burn ring in the cylinder chambers but they were not as bad as the rings from hard lead bullets. I rarely shot jacketed .38 Special bullets, I always liked the 148-grain wadcutters.
I also hate to clean guns (except for my carry guns) and rarely clean a non-carry handgun until it has a few hundred rounds through it. That could also be a contributor. I especially hate cleaning revolvers since it seems to take as long as cleaning 6 semi autos... |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Contrarian that I am, I shot a lot of soft lead .38 target ammo out of my customized .357 PPC revolver. I found no real difficulty in cleaning the ridge out of the cylinders; just used a worn-down .45 brush as a chamber brush. My later .38 PPC revolver got the same cleaning ritual with no real difference in result. The only real concern, to me, is using both ammos in the gun during the same session. So long as the gun is cleaned after firing the shorter cartridge, it means nothing. Stu |
