For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I always believed the forward assist was conceived to solve the "problem" of dirty ammo and/or dirty chambers during wartime, specifically in Vietnam jungles. That's likely closer to the truth, although USAF and USMC (along with Stoner) felt it was an unnecessary device, and could create problems on its own. The original Stoner design called for a chrome lined chamber, and a particular stick powder in the cartridge, which didn't appear until later. Those would have prevented some of the early issues. Stoner also specified 7075 Aluminum (more corrosive resistant) for the receivers, but that too wasn't done until later.
