If a round doesn't feed normally for some reason, do you really want to try to jam it into the chamber? If you do, what are the chances that it's going to fire and extract? I think I'd rather clear the one that didn't feed and try the next one. ![]() I agree. Basically, if the round didn't fully chamber, it was time to cycle the bolt with the charging handle, and then extract the round. I don't know if it was true or urban legend, but the forward assist was supposedly developed because troops in the jungles of Vietnam didn't want to have the noise of working the charging handle to free up a round when they were in contact with the enemy during an ambush.
